A Compassionate Presentation by Dr. Adria E. Navarro, USC Verdugo Hills Hospital
Caregiving for a loved one with Alzheimer’s or other forms of cognitive impairment is one of the most generous acts of love. Whether you are a family member, friend, neighbor or support partner, it’s an opportunity to learn the value of being present in the moment and to share the joy of togetherness, no matter how long it lasts. It’s also a demanding commitment that can be unpredictable and lonely, and it’s commonly marked by grief.
Learn about the importance of recognizing and acknowledging the impact of caregiver grief. Dr. Navarro, Gerontologist and Program Manager of the Community Resource Center for Aging at USC Verdugo Hills Hospital, will explain why losses in communication, companionship, intimacy, roles and relationships can cause caregivers to grieve, even when their loved ones are alive. She will also discuss ways to remain energized in the face of relentless responsibility, ease the pain of ongoing loss, and alleviate the discomfort of a shift in identity.
Topics include:
Moving through Grief
Coping with Feelings that Surface
Ongoing Growth
Stress Management
Relationship Changes
Your Journey Forward
The presentation is ideal for all who are interested in learning more about unacknowledged grief, including professionals who are seeking information to support others.
Dr. Adria E. Navarro is a gerontologist that aims to optimize practices, interventions, and environmental support for older persons. As a California licensed clinical social worker (LCSW), she has held positions at hospitals and community-based health care programs and been active in professional associations such as the National Association of Social Workers. In 2020, Adria worked with USC Verdugo Hills Hospital to launch the Community Resource Center for Aging, a specialized information and assistance program that collaborates with local community and links individuals and their families with health-related services and supports. Her interests have included a focus on social care, especially during challenges such as the loss of persons significant in one’s life.
