Community Symposium on Aging Explores Opportunities and Challenges

As part of The Kensington Sierra Madre’s mission to educate our residents and families, we hosted a Symposium on Aging to empower attendees with the knowledge and resources they need to embrace their aging journey with vitality and vigor.

This event was presented in partnership with the Sierra Madre Senior Commission and Convalescent Aid Society (CAS), to empower individuals with the knowledge and resources they need to embrace aging with vitality and vigor.

This symposium, featuring educational presentations, vendor booths, and opportunities to build community connections, was geared towards providing others with a gateway to a brighter, healthier future.

Our promise is to love and care for your family as we do our own.

Cutting-edge health advancements for seniors

Recent breakthroughs in healthcare are transforming the treatment and management of memory-related conditions for seniors.

New drugs like Leqembi, aducanumab, and donanemab are showing promise in reducing amyloid-beta plaques and slowing the progression of Alzheimer’s.

These medications offer hope to those struggling with memory loss, providing a tangible way to combat the disease.

At the West Virginia University Rockefeller Neuroscience Institute, researchers have combined focused ultrasound with antibody treatments to enhance the clearance of plaques in Alzheimer’s patients.

This innovative approach represents a significant advancement in Alzheimer’s care.

Moreover, new technologies such as advanced MRI techniques and state-of-the-art surgical tools improve diagnostics and treatment options, ensuring that seniors receive precise and effective care.

These advancements bring renewed hope and improved quality of life for those with memory loss.

Embracing holistic wellness

As a caregiver, incorporating wellness practices into your loved one’s daily life is essential.

To assist you, The Kensington Sierra Madre offers “The Kensington Club,” an early-stage memory care day program designed to support cognitive health through brain exercises, expressive arts, and body movement programs like yoga and tai chi.

These activities help maintain cognitive abilities, boost social interaction, and provide a sense of purpose.

The Kensington Club also supports caregivers, allowing you to recharge while knowing your loved one is in capable hands and engaged in meaningful, supportive activities.

Tips for caregivers

  • Encourage participation in group activities to enhance social connections.
  • Incorporate brain exercises and cognitive games into daily routines.
  • Use expressive arts like painting or music therapy to stimulate creativity.
  • Introduce gentle body movement activities like yoga or tai chi.
  • Utilize support groups and educational workshops for additional caregiver support.

Nutrition essentials for aging bodies

Generally, seniors need more calcium, vitamin D, and fiber while limiting sugar and salt intake.

The Mediterranean and DASH diets, rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and healthy fats, support overall health.

Reducing salt and sugar can help prevent strokes and manage weight, which are important for slowing cognitive decline.

Keeping fit with age-appropriate exercises

All seniors can improve mobility to stay healthy, happy, and socially active.

At The Kensington Sierra Madre, on-site rehabilitation specialists from HealthPRO® Heritage offer comprehensive therapy services, including physical, occupational, and speech therapy.

Our exercise classes—Maximizing Independence, Boosting Strength & Elevating Quality of Life—include chair yoga and Zumba Gold, designed to enhance mobility and well-being.

Our residents enjoy improved strength, balance, and quality of life with personalized care plans and an engaging environment.

Boosting brain health and mental well-being

As the brain ages, supporting its ability to adapt and reorganize—neural plasticity—is essential for cognitive health.

Activities stimulating the brain can enhance this plasticity, helping delay cognitive decline. These activities increase synaptic connections, which improve memory and processing speed.

Suggestions to enhance cognitive function:

  • Engage in brain-training exercises focused on problem-solving and memory.
  • To promote neural adaptability, participate in activities that require active learning, such as learning a new language or instrument.
  • Regularly play strategy games like chess, challenging cognitive strategies and decision-making skills.
